  • 10 Years of Democracy.Noor. Photographed at the District Six museum in Cape Town where he works as a tour guide. ."I lived in district 6 until 1975 when the area was bulldozed and I was moved to Athelone. I love my job because I love to meet people. I have showed Al Gore, the royalty of Spain, Belgium and Sweden around the museum and the area. In January of this year I gave Margerat Thatcher a private tour. I never get nervous because they are all human beings. I treat everybody the same, in my eyes everybody is a VIP. I am like this because this was the way in District Six.  I especially enjoy meeting ex- residents, after everyone was sent to separate areas the museum is now able to act as a focal point and meeting place. Last week I met a woman whose face I recognised from 40 years ago. Some Ex residents don't want to come here as it can be very painful. The Museum is a place of healing...I worked for Readers Digest for 31 years, starting as a message boy then working my way up. In 1992 we opened the District six museum for 2 weeks, Then in December 1994 we were invited by the government to open for another two weeks, we haven't shut since. Sometimes we get 500 visors a day, not including schools...For me things have changed for the better since the end of Apartheid. I was scared to even look at white women because if the police saw me they would beat me up.  Freedom of speech is a big change. People must be realistic in their expectations of the government and with the problems we face with crime, drugs and unemployment. The ANC started with nothing. South Africa should be one of the richest countries in the world but the cost of apartheid meant the government was almost bankrupt. A simple example of this is Buses that were for whites only. They would normally run empty or pick up just 2 or 3 passengers for the entire route, there is no way that the bus fares collected would have been enough for that route to breakeven. .In ten years? Mothlabe is a small community in the midst of the Platinum belt North of Rustenburg. During the apartheid era they were forced under the rule of a neighbouring Traditional Authority and the village boundaries redrawn.  In the late 1990’s they submitted a claim for land restitution but the claim came back as a failure but no reasons where given. They have since appealed but heard nothing. In 2004, a platinum mine began operating on the land in question and it’s profits have been used to develop other villages. When the Mothclabe community proposed independence by forming their own Traditional Authority they were issued with a court interdict preventing them from holding meetings and using the term ‘Mothlabe Traditional Authority.’  The Legal Resources Centre has since successfully defended them in court against the interdict. Meanwhile Mothlabe remains poor and restitution of their land is no closer.  <br />

During Apartheid the workers in the mountain retreat town of Hogsback were not allowed to own their own property. They had to reside on their employer’s properties or commute from the Ciskei homeland in the valley below.<br />
<br />
Since the early 1990’s the workers in Hogsback have been trying to get the go ahead for a low cost housing development but continue to face delays and legal challenges. The Legal Resources Centre is representing the Hogsback workers in negotiations to find a suitable site for the low cost housing development.<br />

<br />

  • Shirhami Shrinda Legal Researcher from the LRC meets with Mother & Daughter Francina and Selina Netshakhuma. They have lived and worked on a farm near Musina for several years. When the farm was sold the new owner no longer required their services and threatened them with eviction without giving them an alternative place to go. The Legal Resources Centre has assisted them with legal advice and prevented them from becoming homeless. This case illustrates the vulnerability of rural farm workers who have no security of tenure.
